Tournament with Amateur National Teams celebrates a Comeback after 45 years

September 23, 2025 – After more than four decades, a football tradition that once inspired Europe is making a Comeback – Amateur National Teams are stepping onto the international stage again.

Following the Amateur National Team Revival international matches between Austria and Slovenia in November 2023 and April 2024, which took place after a 43-year break, a Tournament Format for Amateur National Teams is now returning for the first time in 45 years. The AMATEUR NATIONAL TEAMS NATIONS CUP 2025 will take place on October 6 and 8, 2025, in the Sportland Lower Austria region of Austria.

The AMATEUR NATIONAL TEAMS NATIONS CUP 2025 marks a hugely important next step in the revival and reintroduction of Amateur National Teams at the international level. Participating in the tournament are the Amateur National Teams of AUSTRIA and SLOVENIA, both the initiating nations, and BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA, which will set up an amateur national team for the first time in football history since gaining independence in 1992. GREENLAND, which has sought official membership in FIFA, UEFA, and CONCACAF in recent years but was not admitted as a separate nation (as part of the Kingdom of Denmark), will also participate in the tournament. Neunkirchen, Ternitz, and Traiskirchen in Lower Austria were selected as the host cities for October 6 and 8. The call-ups and nominations of the best amateur players from the highest semi-pro and amateur leagues are well underway in the participating nations and will be announced in the next days.

The AMNT NATIONS CUP 2025 is another opportunity for top amateur players to showcase their best football skills on the international stage. Of the 45 active players and coaches in the revival matches between Austria and Slovenia in November 2023 and April 2024, 11 players and one coach received professional contracts from professional clubs. This is a clear sign that reintroducing Amateur National Teams makes a lot of sense and has great potential.

In a time when professional football is increasingly dominated by money and commercial interests, this tournament brings back the original spirit of football/soccer – passion, community, and the chance for amateur players to proudly represent their nations.

"The most important thing, however, is to raise public awareness of the importance of amateur football as a whole," explain the organizing and involved initiators, football experts and FIFA match agents of the current participating nations.
